Float tank at Altoona Floatation
Signature Service

Float
Session.

Sixty minutes inside a private flotation tank filled with about 1,000 pounds of dissolved Epsom salt. The water is heated to 93.5°F — average skin temperature — so the boundary between body and water gradually disappears. The tank is light- and sound-reduced, removing the constant low-grade load on your nervous system.

What's left is something close to nothing: no gravity, no visual input, no ambient noise. Your body finally stops bracing. Your nervous system shifts into parasympathetic mode. For most people, sixty minutes in the tank produces more measurable rest than several hours of sleep.

Who Books This

Float therapy is for.

Three groups make up most of our regulars. If you fit one of these — or if you've simply been looking for an hour of real silence — you're our client.

High-stress lives

Demanding jobs, family obligations, the steady hum of modern attention. Your nervous system rarely gets to fully stand down. The tank gives it permission.

Athletes & active recovery

Zero gravity plus magnesium absorption from Epsom salt makes float therapy one of the most effective recovery tools available — for serious training or just a body that's been working hard.

Chronic pain & sleep issues

For ongoing back, neck, joint pain, or insomnia, the combination of zero compression and parasympathetic shift creates conditions the body almost never gets in daily life.

A Walk-Through

What happens during your float.

The first session takes about 90 minutes door to door. Repeat visits are faster — about 75 minutes — because you skip the orientation walk-through.

01

Arrive & orient.

A short walkthrough of the tank, the controls, the lighting options, and the door. Every first-timer gets a full briefing — there's no scenario where you walk in cold.

02

Pre-float shower.

Required before every session. The gym showers are right there. Wash off oils, lotions, and sweat — these contaminate the saltwater for future clients.

03

Sixty minutes in the tank.

Step in. Settle on your back. The salt holds you up effortlessly — no floating technique required. The first ten minutes are adjustment. The next fifty are yours.

04

Rinse & return.

A second shower rinses the salt off. Take your time — there's no rush. Most clients stay noticeably calmer for hours afterward; some report the effect carrying into the next day.

What It Actually Does

The science of stillness.

Float therapy isn't woo. The mechanisms are well-studied — sensory reduction, magnesium absorption, parasympathetic activation, and physical decompression. Here's what each one does.

Mechanism 01

Sensory reduction

The tank removes the constant low-grade load your nervous system processes — light, sound, gravity-related muscle bracing, ambient temperature differential. Without that input, your sympathetic nervous system finally shifts down.

Studies on R.E.S.T. (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) show measurable drops in cortisol and improvements in heart rate variability after a single session.

Mechanism 02

Magnesium absorption

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium plays a role in over 300 enzymatic processes — muscle relaxation, nerve function, sleep regulation. Most adults are mildly deficient.

Transdermal absorption is debated in the research, but the prolonged exposure to a highly concentrated magnesium solution at skin temperature provides at least some uptake.

Mechanism 03

Parasympathetic activation

In a quiet, low-input environment, the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system finally gets to dominate. This is where digestion, repair, immune function, and recovery happen.

Most people live in a chronic sympathetic-dominant state. The tank gives the parasympathetic system room to take over — sometimes for the first time in weeks.

Mechanism 04

Physical decompression

Without gravity pulling on joints and intervertebral discs, the spine decompresses. Muscles stop holding the body up. Connective tissue gets a break it almost never gets.

For people with chronic back pain, joint issues, or repetitive-stress injuries, the relief is often immediate — and tends to last well past the session itself.

Honest Heads-Up

Float therapy isn't for everyone.

A few medical situations make float therapy a poor fit. Our intake form covers all of these, and we're happy to talk through anything you're unsure about.

Contraindications

Please don't book if you have:
